Sailing Songs .. songs featuring the sea and sailing?

Post by Lee »

`
Just wondering, teens have been asking for popular songs about boats, sailing etc?

Besides sea shanties, we remember "Southern Cross" sung by Crosby, Stills & Nash

https://www.guitarlegacy.net/post/csn-southerncross.

Other songs spring to mind maybe?

Lyrics:

"Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands

Sailing a reach before a followin' sea

She was makin' for the trades on the outside

And the downhill run to Papeete

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas

We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way ...

I have been around the world, lookin' for that woman girl

Who knows love can endure, and you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time

You understand now why you came this way ... etc

Sailing, by Rod Stewart comes to mind first. South Australia, by the Pouges, a refreshed shanty. Also Jimmy Buffet has made it a genre and is good if your in the mood sitting in the cockpit.

Type in sailing in spotify, there are heaps of good ones.

Many thanks dear gentlefolk. All good nominations, and great suggestions for more.

As people seem to know, singing, sailors and the sea all seem to go together so well.

And another beautiful example of which one is reminded Dan Fogelburg and The Reach

Haha, and if one may say, well done people.

Indeed it seems that most human civilizations have invented songs of the sea.

Maybe it's the danger, the bountiful resources, eternal rhythms, or comradeship?

And worldwide many such songs also involve a genuine love and respect for the sea.

Whatever. May creating songs of the sea remain traditional for civilizations everywhere.

Happy trails all, Lee.

Hi Lee,
If you are interested in finding "tradition" or trad-style songs of the sea, (mainly not shanties) you could be well served by checking out the wealth of material from British "folk-rock" bands Fairport Convention, The Oysterband and Wolfstone, who combine electric and acoustic rock styles with traditional music and instruments, in both trad and original songs. They are barely heard-of in Australia, but are widely played and followed in Britain, where so much of our musical and maritime traditions originate. And, of course, Canadian Stan Rogers.

This is getting to be like a boat show with a dozen sailing songs on rotation!

At the "Folk on the Water" festival some years ago, Bluehorses were playing "Smoke on the Water" and a narrowboat exploded in flames
