Re: New sails

Tezza, I meant the collar, should have looked back at the diagram to check. I used a spare ring for mounting an inspection port 150mm inside diameter, too much friction, and the head of the Assy is quite stiff. What size is your collar? I put the sleeve for the uphaul on the outside, in a different ...

Ahh again, the halyard has nothing to do with that bit. Forget I asked.

New sails

Ahh. I see the upward control line is in a sleeve on the outside of the sock, but I am a little confused by the "rod" between the head and the turning block. I presume that is just to hold the sail below the bulk of the sock so that it can open properly. Would a stopper knot in the halyard...

Re: New sails

The original sail plan for my Jim Young 6m shows a set of reef points in the jib, but they were not in the sail I got with it. There was a storm jib instead. Have you tried out the reefing while sailing? I am interested in the spinnaker sock, the sailmakers' videos show them in use, but the details ...

Re: Nth Qld Trailer Sailers

Yes it was a nice weekend, thanks, Townsville. Here is another photo, same weekend, low tide. It is too short to row but I learnt to scull many years ago. Arthritis in my hand makes that painful at the moment so the little 12v motor does the job. The transom is held on by wing nuts, there is a strip...

Re: Electric Trailer winch for Timpenny 670.

I tried an Aldi winch identical to the cheap Whitworths one. The idea was good, great for putting my mast up and down on my own, but hopeless for winching the boat on to the trailer, and my boat is less than 1,000 Kg once the ballast water drains out. Tempted to try the 4WD style and would be intere...

Re: Boomaroo 25

I sit the forward end on the pulpit, but the aft end is propped up so when parked up with a cover over we have reasonable headroom. A simple bipod is good, but you may have to make it on site. We have often stayed in caravan parks, but prefer to keep the cost down by using Wiki Camps as a resource. ...

Re: Fairlite Gull

Looked at the Gull, the plate shows 600x300 below the bottom of the boat, and has a piece of angle welded on the top corner, see the photo, (to follow). Never thought to take a gauge for thickness, but looks to be 3/16" , close to 5mm, and hot-dip galv. Mast is 5255 O.A. Hounds are at 3700. Pho...

Re: Fire

Many many years ago we had a dry powder extinguisher on the bulkhead in the forward cabin, in case you got caught with a fire blocking the main exit. Bashing into a NE one night-race and fell off the back of a wave with a crash that caused the extinguisher to fall out of the bracket. In those days t...

I think remote controls in the cockpit is a good idea, and I wish I was 10 years younger. Very nice boat.

Re: Anchor light

About 5 years ago I bought a solar powered Rail Light from Whitties. Worked well, stayed on all night. Started getting a bit tired last year so I bought another one. Died about midnight. So I got a bigger rechargeable battery and followed the instructions for installing it. One of the wires fell off...

Re: Cockpit lines and sheet bag alternatives

Halyards, etc go to the left of the winch and stow in the bag. But the jib sheet hangs over the GPS. Overcome with the sun-shade, cut from a Peters one litre ice cream container.

I bought an Aldi winch, similar to the Whitworths special. Hopeless. Sold it to a guy with a tinny.

Hi All I have just purchased an Isuzu NLS AWD as my new tow vehicle for doing the lap with my Imexus 28 which when loaded for extended cruising comes in at well over 3 ton on trailer. I am also fitting a slide on camper but with a GVM of 4500kg and a GCM of 8000kg I will be well within my respectiv...

Re: So what does happen when . .

I seem to remember when you heave too, after the tack you must tie the tiller to lee, so if the boat starts to move forward it will round up but the backed jib will stop it from tacking. It will back up until the main fills and then go forward and try to tack again. Hard to achieve after you have fa...

Re: New rudder blade Farr 6000

The rudder blade in my photos is Qld red cedar, a bit hard to get down south. It is easy to work and I wondered about hardwood on the leading edge. Decided just to give it 2 coats of epoxy resin, then varnish to protect it from ultraviolet. Also made a canvas cover. It has had numerous knocks, I jus...
