I had a dennis as my first boat, I found a long shaft was best, you could likely get away with a short shaft in canberra, but then I have not sailed the lake there so dont really know what conditions can get like, a short shaft will be out of the water at some stage....so I would definitely go long....

I use caster oil the racing kind, it disperses in the fuel better doesnt stink like two stroke nor make your crew sick, it does cost a couple of dollars more but not enough to care

Yep does sounds like dog gear to me too, however before you throw it away suggest that you check the gear lever sometimes they can work loose enough that vibration will cause this problem to occur, if you havent already done so check the linkage

Could be a false floor, hard to say, dont know what type of Boat you have there, if it is a false floor that in a sense is better for you, if you have a diamond cutter cut that section out. Prepare and glass up whatever the crack is beneath and re mould that section of the floor that you have cutout...

Ok Joe, without looking at it, yes you can grind out the crack past the damage and then reglass , make sure you are well wide with your grinding and allow enough area for glass and resin to bite into or you wont get a satisfactory bond.
