Re: ROSS 780's

I had posted this on another thread here but thought it would be worthwhile copying it on this one also. Update on transom mounted outboard motor. I did a few mods to my Ross 780 mk1to accommodate a Yamaha 9.9hp four stroke on the transom. I made a video on it here https://youtu.be/Oce8PWaPRC4 The b...

Re: Boat stuck on trailer

Berny, The bow line should always be to a cleat on the bow, NOT to the eye. Reason is the bow eyes are stepped where they pass through the curved plate, and they are square, not even beveled as stress relief. They are made to take a straight pull forwards, and if you load them sideways they will of...

Re: Yamaha 9.9hp 4-stroke cold starting problem

Just an update on this issue, after numerous sea trials I can confidently put the blame to this cold starting problem squarely to that tiny adjustment screw on top of the thermal valve unit. Also by replacing the little rubber seal on the thermal valve piston it has alleviated the erratic revs and i...

Re: Yamaha 9.9hp 4-stroke cold starting problem

Thanks Wanton, my pleasure. I believe Yamaha discontinued this setup from 2004-on. Too many problems with it I imagine. The theory of it is fascinating though.

Yamaha 9.9hp 4-stroke cold starting problem

After having spent many hours searching for a solution to this perennial problem all across the internet and various forums to no avail, I believe I have discovered the root cause of the cold starting problem that these outboards have. Yamaha uses a thermally actuated valve to enrich the fuel mixtur...

Re: ROSS 780's

So keel is clear in front of front axle by about 100mm. It can drop through on to the road to lower mast. There's a 70 litre water bladder under the v berth which was dry at the time tow ball weight measurement was taken.

So picked up a trailer second hand and made up some cradles to rest the boat on. Checked tow ball weight at 120kg. https://photos.app.goo.gl/h2mcb2v7bwZASFGP6 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ARaVqLAtGg7FcCB7M2sFBQPkKBSzCJqn5qbTS9UZDB54vzeTVY8GizCMmZFq13gRyZsrXG6L8qpWeAaniFhs4CDLLskQNu_UbD5-S7JPPnD...

Re: opinions/experience - Torsion bar trailer suspension

Avoid like the plague would be my advice, I had the alko irs on the trailer that came with my R780, it just looked like a rusty old mess with no way of knowing for sure if it was roadworthy. Did ride well tho.

Re: ROSS 780's

Thanks for the pics. So whats the go regards to weight distribution? Obviously if you're running full axles the keel needs to drop either side of the front axle. Which works best and why? My thoughts are keel just behind front axle, but how does this affect stability while towing?

Actually not priceless just got my pen renewal fees. Ouch. I'm going make the move to a nearby club where it costs a fraction of that to keep it on their hardstand. Problem is l let go of my trailer so now l need a new one. Mind you the old one was on its last wheels

Re: ROSS 780's

Its called an "AirBerth". Yes it sinks by lowering a snorkel on each pontoon, being a trailer sailer I can raise the keel up to get on and off. It took a few mods to take my boat on it as they are really made for stink boats. I basically attached some air inflated fenders were the boat rests on it t...

Re: Assy Kites

Recently added an asymmetrical spinnaker to the sail inventory. I often sail solo so it promises to be a way I can use a kite while racing. Why solo? Just cannot find crew and none so far have been consistent. So have made a bowsprit from 1.75in ally tube, was left over from my previous mast raising...
