Raymarine Dragonfly 4 Pro

Post by Wingman » Feb 16th, '19, 20:39

I couldn't see a review of this product on here so I thought I'd post one. I was originally only after a depth indicator but for the same price I got this monster. Depth, speed, temperature, excellent Chirp down vision, sonar, Navionics charts and wifi connectivity to phone or tablet. The screen is very clear with good resolution. Thankfully it's not touch screen so it won't get covered in sunscreen smudges. I would probably plump for the 5" screen (extra $150) if I went again but you won't be disappointed with this product. Apparently a new version is coming out so you can buy these for about $300.
Cheers!

I'd never get a touch screen. How often do you have wet hands on a boat...

Thank you for the review. I had been wondering about them. The whole marine electronics thing is overwhelming.

How did you go mounting the transducer? I see its one of those stern models, so I've always wondered how well they work in a trailer sailer

Firstly, the transom transducer mounted easily as I was able to get it low enough but out of the way of the rudder. The transom is obviously not the best place to find out your depth when you have 20' of boat in front of it but I was not going to drill a hole in the boat for a hull mounted one. We found that the readings were excellent even with the boat heeling in 10-12 kts. If she's really heeling over the result may be different. As for availability, Road Tech Marine have the 4 Pro advertised for $299 but in store only. You can check store stock online. I bought the last one that the Canberra store had. Definitely go for the 'Pro' model because of the wifi connectivity.
Cheers!

Just bed the transducer (facing the right way) in silicon ahead of the keel. Even if you have a cored or otherwise not solid fibreglass hull this area is likely to be solid fibreglass for strength. I tested mine first (bag of water) and then glued it was confirmed working. Works fine firing through the hull. Water temperature is not correct of course.
