Supply, bend, weld 25mm stainless steel tube in Melbourne?

Post by zebedee » May 26th, '12, 09:30

I want to build a bracket for a solar panel and a rear mast support and I'm looking for someone who can bend 1" stainless tube in Melbourne. If they can also do my welding for a sensible price that would save some stuffing around too.

Any suggestions?

I've found a supplier for small quantities of stainless steel in Cheltenham.

http://www.geordi.com.au/
Map of their location.

I've just bought one metre of 30mmx6mm flat bar in 304 for $15; they had no hesitation in cutting it from a full length. They quoted $10.20 per metre for 25mm tube with 1.6mm wall thickness in 316. For estimating purposes, these prices are about $10/kg.

They do stainless steel fabrication work, mostly centred around food, dairy and pharmaceuticals from the look of it, with the result that they're small enough to sell small stuff and big enough to have a wide range of stainless steel.

But alas, Geordi can't/won't bend 1" 316 tube for me.

And the place that said they thought they could do it decided that they can't either.

Before I go out and buy a (half share in a) hydraulic pipe bender (with my tame welder), can anyone recommend someone in Melbourne for a few simple bends in 1" 316 tube?

I haven't ever used this guy, but I was told he was very good at what he does, and helpful, some years ago...

He might be worth a try, Graham...

Thanks Marg!

Ray (onthebay) and I had a go with his press this evening with limited success. While we can do an acceptable modest bend of 10 to 20deg, we don't think we'd get a good enough result for a 90deg bend.

Ray said there was someone in Dingley Avenue in Dandenong, but he couldn't remember what they were called. This is presumably them; I'll have a talk to them tomorrow.

Did you pack the pipe with sand before bending?

Quality Marine Fabrications, AKA QMF winches, at 41 Dingley Avenue Dandenong; appears to be one man and a very friendly dog.

Now moved a short distance to Egan Rd Dandenong South.
Moved again! Now at 4/1 Capital Place Carrum Downs, a couple of doors down and across the road from Huntsman trailer parts

He was busy with another customer when I arrived, so I made friends with the dog. He did my two 90deg bends for me while I waited and seemed reluctant to charge me $10.

There were quite a lot of rocket launchers, etc, around which looked well made. For example, the quality of fit and weld where two tubes meet at a T was excellent. There was a recently delivered a pallet of laser cut stainless steel plate components; presumably a fair bit of what he does is standard designs, but clearly a lot of it was one off custom stuff.

When I was looking at the website I was intrigued with the anchor winches he has designed...

QMF did my two 90 degree bends which came out perfectly. I drilled the mounting holes for the bases this afternoon and rough assembled the bow to the boat; now I need to decide how much shorter I want it (its too high right now).

I still need two 10 degree bends, which Ray's press can do satisfactorily but most of the bending (and the fibreglass drilling) is done now.

We (Iain my tame welder and I) are thinking of turning up a mandrel and bending die to build a tube bender.

Another plug for Sean, his mobile is 0407-993-226 and he's located in East Malvern.

And no, he's not a rellie or a mate of mine.

Cheers, Graeme
