South Coast adventures

Post by Castle 610 » Jan 10th, '14, 15:54

The in laws have a beach house on the south coast near Narooma and this year I thought I would take the Castle and dip its toes into the Pacific.

The first few days the weather forecast was a bit strong but i managed to get three days in.

Wednesday we sailed out from Bermagui to give the family a sense of ocean sailing. After being a bit scared and seasick in the morning we had lunch and a swim in the beautiful lagoon and went out again. this time the family really enjoyed it. A great day. I am surprised more tses don't sail there. You could even tie up overnight stern to the beach in the lagoon area TS style.

Yesterday my father in law and I sailed out of Moruya and up to Batemans Bay. About 30 kms. WIth the 15 knot NE it was a bit of a beat - having to tack once or twice near Broulee to get past Burrewarre point. We made BB in about three and a half hours from the heads of Moruya. Neither Moruya bar nor BB bat posed any diffiulties. I stayed overnight in the BB marina for $30. FIL went home.

This morning I sailed back to Moruya solo on a freshening NE wind. took just under three hours this time bar to bar. I went into Moruya entrance on the low tide (incoming) with the keel wound a up just a bit. I kept the jib up and the motor going hard. It's an amazing entrance. While there is surf 50m to port, a boat width or two off the rock wall there is a channel. The entry was fine.

Up the river takes about an hour on the motor. I used the ramp near the town.

Overall a great trip. Very scenic and a nice easy distance.

Thanks to Bruce from beau bateau seaway 25 for his advice before Christmas.

I just have to tow the boat back to Melbourne tomorrow before I can call it a successful trip.

They do say the devil is in the details!
Hopefully this final detail turns out as well as the rest of your trip.

What could possibly go wrong?

Actually zeb I towed Rollercoaster up here once too and the trip went very smoothly. The Princes Hwy is pretty hilly though.

Zeb. I made it. Boat is in driveway.Just under 10 hrs. Gave the old truck a good thrashing but it seems to have taken it well.

Stephen, I towed Corolis (my Dennis) from the Lakes to Sydney up the coast road in 1998 with my Nissan Pulsar.

I remember the hills very well; I got my LPG consumption up to levels that would upset me today in the Rodeo (without a boat), around 3.5km per litre!

For contrast, I've just got back from 800km to Wangaratta/Rutherglen/Corowa/Yarrawonga and back, 5.6km/litre with no trailer. Around Melbourne or towing the boat down to the Lakes I get about 4km/litre.

I wasnt really counting consumption...what option would I have other than to keep pouring it in?

I find the trip back easier than the trip up. Something about the hills. The bit from Bairnsdale to Melb is a doddle.

Is gas still cheaper than 89.9 in Bairnsdale?
It was around 93 in Wang and 105.9 most other places I saw.

Sorry zeb. Didn't stop there.
It was under a dollar in traralgon. Yay.

The next trip it would be good to sail Moruya to Bermy. About six hrs in the typical NE you get there.
Any problems though and you would be RS.
A couple of days the forecast was 25 southerly and it blew more like 30-40. Also the EAC does an eddy just off that bit of coast.

Bermagui is a paradise with no crowds. No ramp fees and easy access to ocean.

Thanks Stephen, we usually stop at Bermagui in the motel at the T intersection ( off street boat parking, very reasonaby priced family rooms) . I love the white chocolate, apple and coconut pizzas across the road  . Everytime I've been through I wonder about launching the nx, nice to know it's viable. I'm thinking it's time to do mallacoota / bermagui / moruya the easy way in autumn ( trailering between) .

This year we did two more stretches of coast . Each around 60kms.

Moruya to Bermagui.

Batemans Bay to Ulladulla.

Aim is to sail each leg between Sydney and Eden. We are getting there having now sailed Jervis Bay to Bermagui.

The only keelboat we met this year was at Ulladulla and they had been dismasted the day before. Hit by a squall. I was about to leave via the car with boat in tow so have him a lift to the servo so he could buy gas.

Our trips were uneventful. Very careful with forecasts which meant it was fairly light and from the rear quarter. So from Bates to Ulladulla was 6 hrs mostly spinnaker.

60kms or around 30 odd nm is more doable than l though. We didnt leave especially early and arrived in time for coffee.
Based on this the longest stretch left ie Bermy to Eden is slso doable.
