Photo bucket terms of use changed

Post by bachus » Jul 18th, '17, 09:43

Links to Photobucket hosted photos will start to show a message and not the photo. This will affect large sections of the site I fear. If you can find another hosting option then you can edit your posts to restore the images. But other hosting sites may also pull the same trick.

New items here: http://blog.photobucket.com/please-revi ... otobucket/

But basically you have to pay for said access by third party sites to the tune USD399 per year . . . . like as if . . .

If you wish to download all you photo bucket photos for re-hosting somewhere else then (from another site http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f100/ ... 63817.html):

----- snip -----

1. Go to https://secure.photobucket.com/login and login to your account.

2. Next to your avatar/username on the left hand side, select "View Library"

3. At the next screen go to the menu on the right hand side of the screen. 3 menu headings "Share this album", "Actions" and "Description". In the area under "Actions", select "download album".

You may have issues doing this in Google Chrome, so try Mozilla Firefox.

4. The software will go thru various checks to ensure you are a human, and it will then download a zipped file, which appears to contain all the images you have loaded into your photobucket account.

Only one small problem......the filenames have a small encryption/coded name now. You will have to go thru and re-title them (if necessary), but, at the very least, you have the photos that were in your photobucket account.

---- end snip -----

A possible workaround from another site. I have not tried this:

From here: http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f100/ ... 63817.html

As such, we've come across an extension for Chrome users that will enable you to see the broken images hosted from PB. Another temp fix for now (who knows how long it'll hold up) but here it is -
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...bifiaedg?hl=en <- click on that link and do the following:

Add Ext > open the added ext at the top right corner of your browser "P" > select Manage Ext > tick off the box for both Allow in Cognito and Allow access to file URLs > refresh link of affected images to see they're visible again!

----- end snip ----

Trusting a tech company offering a free service is fraught with danger, as the start up monies vanish they put adverts everywhere / sell your data / or turn the screws on users to recoup the costs - it happens a lot........

If you're not the customer*, then you're the product**.

* present customer, or future customer when they start charging; eg: Nearmap, which was initially free to build up interest.

**eg: eyes & data for advertising.
