Re: New build Scarab 16

Mast beam has the triax and uni done however my poor cordless grinder popped the, what could only be described as, shear pin. Its a piece of rubber in between the motor and the gearbox. Unfortunately tore one side out. So while that is out of action i can't trim back the glass for the final layers o...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Got a slight issue with the tape sticking to the curves on the transom, looks like a grinder job to me ;) I should have just made the drain holes angled rather than rounded. Not too worry, will remove the unstuck bits and fair over. Those holes are actually round but for some reason in the photo the...

Float closed. Waiting for the next round of fairing and then taping

Closed inside the beam as well. Angled it out to stop water pooling there when the boat is stored.

It's a Duncanson, seabita is narrower in the stern.

Re: which boat should I look at?

It's a boat, it's continuously work in progress.

Don't forget to angle the lower tip, don't want water separation at those break neck speeds. ;)

Re: Spinnaker on Austral 20

See where you have the line running up from the pole? You should have one that runs down as well. In light airs you need the line running up, but in any air you need the line running from the bottom down. The line running up makes gybing easier as the pole will hold itself up and the crewman doesn't...

Re: Launching on the sunshine coast

Those rivers are pretty tight. Skip them and head to Lake Cootharaba. You can pull the boat up to the little beach, safe as for kids and the local store is just a short stroll. Good place to camp out on the boat too :) Not sure how much the caravan park is these days, haven't been up there for years...

Re: which boat should I look at?

Definately long sleeve shirts and gloves, once done dust everything off then hose your arms and gloves off or anywhere else coated. I also wear boots and long pants, glasses and dust mask. I tried the talc as Ukuri said but it didn't seem to have the effect I wanted. So prevention is better than cur...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Not much action today, deck pieces cut out and sorted out how high the deck stringer should sit to give it a nice curve. Hopefully more action tomorrow. I need to get the seat glass sanded so i can lay some more glass near it.

Re: which boat should I look at?

Are the beams bent or straight? If they are straight replacement should be petty quick. Get the grinder on the rust until you have shiny metal then assess. You might find it looks worse than it is and you've only lost a small fraction of steel, except for that beam in your photo where it was missing...

Re: New build Scarab 16

To hot for that. Nice to have the cars in the garage. I would have built in the car port but the chance of getting the ply wet was pretty high and I didn't like that option. With no light out there would have meant no night work and I wouldn't even have a float done by now. Plus I don't trust the ne...

Re: which boat should I look at?

Weld on Tube sliders are cheap to buy (cheap to make too) Zinc Weld on Tube Slide Adjuster $2.90 You can also buy clamp ons, Galv 2” x 1” Clamp on Tube Adjuster $8.75 but at that price you could buy some flat bar, some bolts and using a vice bend them up yourself and weld on the weld on tube slider ...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Gotta get it done :) Seats taped in last night, just a couple more bits to go! Made the sides of the boat super stiff, I thought they might still flex a bit but, no. Deck needs to be templated this weekend and hopefully boat will be out of the garage next weekend and outside (under car port) for mam...

Re: New build Scarab 16

I can sit on a seat! Even though they are not rounded and taped in the rigidity they provide is quite astounding. Managed to get a brick stuck to the seat due to sticky fingers. It came of with minimal damage to the seat. The main hull is quite narrow and I've had to chock under the ring frame beams...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Went and had a better look at the fill job. Gaps on the side are 25mm so two 12mm thin strips each side to fill the void, sanded to shape to keep the curve. On the hand access space I'll under pin with some 9mm and then fiill the gap with 6mm. Bit of fillet glue across the top and some db tape to wr...
