Re: New build Scarab 16

I do everything that isn't noisy as a night shift. Kids go to bed, i go to boat. Cutting out ply, fibreglass and sanding are kids awake jobs. The boat is directly beneath the bedrooms.

Re: New build Scarab 16

Main hull chines on the inside are done. Main hull frames located and tacked in this morning. Cut out the glass for the ring frame and the last two stubs. Going to get the main frames in first, then cut the hull open for the ring frames so i can double check the spacing. Need the main frames in to s...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Still beats fairing with longboard and Interprotect, 40 microns at the time, because I didn't do a good enough job with the 410 fairing. just turn the other cheek. It'll be underwater and no-one will see it ;) Been a slow week - Ring frame bonded, need to get some reinforcement on it and get the be...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Glassing this, filleting and taping that. Nothing exciting happening. Now that the hull is right way up, I've decided that it would be best to pull the deck back to station 4 which is where the front beams are. That'll give some under deck area for storing stuff. That will also get the mast step up ...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Well the chines got done, boat covered in glass, glass filled except for the vertical side. Bottom sanded smooth, still needs a fair though. Main hull is very light. Suspended the stern with a rachet tie down from the roof, you can lift the stern with one hand. Lifted the stem and stuck a saw horse ...

Re: Mast raising pole

I think you're overestimating how hard it is to raise a mast, you'll be fine without anything. Not as light as the 125 but ;)

No way you'd get 4 inside a standard scarab 16 cabin. Jarcat 5 is a much better option.

Re: New build Scarab 16

Two external chines tapes to go on the main hull, might be able to flip it on monday!

Then i'll have to start chopping some more ply for the frames. First mate is out of action still so not much going on.

Certainly looks the goods. Don't forget the motor when you do your ball weight.

No handle on the keel winch? Does it winch by telekinesis? ;)

Re: New build Scarab 16

Dropped into CG Composites to grab their last roll of tape (phew!). Nice bunch of people there spent more time yakking about building stuff then it took to buy the roll. The taping can now continue. The order from Trojan should arrive later in the week and then I'll have enough to finish the job. Wh...

Re: Imexus 28 Specs and Info

Awesome trip, an unhitched trailer of any size is pretty scary.

Where is Zeb with the calc of the force required to unhitch a 3t trailer from a car?

Loose footers seem to live longer as the cloth stretches, plus you can hang more over the boom in the gap.

to finish off twill weave glass will drape nicely over pointy and ball shaped bits.
Normally there is clothing for that, sorry couldn't resist.

Re: New build Scarab 16

aawww I ran out of glass tape too. I think my plans for flipping the main hull on the weekend are now dashed. Tape and Triax ordered, but will take a few days to get here. Not to worry always something to do.

Re: New build Scarab 16

Ran out of triax today, BOM seems short by about 2 or 3 metres, I'll calc it up later. Have 1 more beam stub to cut out and the two beam mounts. 7 layers each side of the stub and 3 layers each side of the two beam mounts and then the triax is done. Chines sanded on the second float, main transom sa...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Can't use something stiff as I need it to round and flare/taper out to blend into the bottom panel. This led me to plastic tubing, but I'm going to give the plastic sheet a go today as we have some from the wifes sewing adventures. Tip for those dress makers amongst us, transfer or reprint your plan...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Float 1 now weighs 30.4kgs. So deck and transom should add about 6 kgs and I'll weigh a beam tomorrow to get a weight estimate. I think that is 13kgs heavier than when they came off the frames. That's with inside and outside chine tapes, 6 frames, deck stringers and stem reinforcement. Speaking of t...

Re: New build Scarab 16

Hey Harb, Work has me flat out this week. 6am to 7pm most days. I did manage to get one float taped outside and the insides finished on both. Just sanded one chine on the outside of the second float with 3 more chines to sand. Transom tacked onto the main hull. Will pull the fasteners and finish tha...
